BACK-TO-BACK CONCERTS
ARE ONE VEHICLE TO RAISE MONEY
& SUPPLIES
FOR HURRICANE VICTIMS
WHAT: FUNDRAISER FOR
HURRICANE RELIEF EFFORTS.
The Handlebar (Greenville, SC), together with 96.7 The Buzzard & Mountain
Entertainment, has graciously offered to host a fundraiser and supply
drive on Wednesday, September 28 and Thursday, September 29.
Over 20 acts will take the stage to provide two evenings of entertainment
in the spirit of kindness as the community strives to help hurricane
victims.
There is no admission to the event, yet organizers suggest a minimum
donation of $10 or at least $10 worth of necessary supplies. Monies raised
during the night will be donated to the American Red Cross. A
tractor-trailer will be on site for the collection of donated items, which
will be sent to affected areas for immediate relief to the victims.
In the weeks following Hurricane Katrina, GBS Lumber, the Better Business
Bureau, Synnex, Clearchannel, and other upstate companies and
organizations have been accepting donations at various drop-off points in
the community. Ten trucks full of water, food, toiletries, diapers and
much more, have been sent to various Gulf Coast cities - from Jackson, MS
to Luling, LA. The supplies donated through the September 28-29 benefit
will be sent to Luling, LA for the victims and volunteers who’re now based
there– one of who has close ties to the upstate community.
Lou Hutchings (Simpsonville, SC) of GBS Lumber and the BBB drove one of
the previously mentioned truckloads. His son, Dr. John J. Hutchings and
John’s fiancée, Rebecca Meyers, were living in New Orleans when Katrina
hit. Their house sustained damage and after a brief trip “home” to
Simpsonville, the couple found themselves in Luling, LA. Twenty miles west
of New Orleans, Luling is a main thoroughfare between the Big Easy and
Baton Rouge and is a center for medial attention and relief for evacuees.
Hutchings and Meyers, both in the medical field, are working at St.
Charles Parish Hospital. As well as volunteering their time and expertise
at St. Charles Parish Community Health Center Urgent Care Clinic, which
provides service at a reduced or no cost. Luling is now the temporary home
for residents of New Orleans, St Bernard Parish, and other surrounding
areas that saw immense devastation.
Craig Debolt and his staff at Clearchannel are working in conjunction with
Dr. Hutchings and his father, Lou, to get necessary supplies to the people
there. Workers and victims are in dire need of more. Hurricane Benefit
representatives will be on hand both nights to receive donations that will
be sent directly to St. Charles Parish.
